Read the excerpt from The Scarlet Ibis.
That summer, the summer of 1918, was ruined. In May and June there was no rain and the crops withered, curled and then died in the thirsty sun. One morning in July, a hurricane came from the east, flattening the oak trees in the backyard and snapping the branches of the elm trees. He roared back from the west that afternoon, sweeping up the fallen oaks, breaking their roots and tearing them out of the earth like a hawk into a hen's entrails. Cotton bolls were plucked from the stalks and placed like unripe walnuts in the valleys between the rows as the corn slanted evenly so that the tassels touched the ground. Doodle and I followed Dad out into the cotton field, where he stood with his shoulders slumped and surveyed the ruins. When his chin dropped to his chest, we jumped and Doodle placed his hand in mine. Suddenly Dad straightened his shoulders, raised a huge, bony fist and, in a voice that seemed to come out of the earth itself, began cursing heaven, hell, the weather and the Republican Party. Doodle and I, teasing and laughing at each other, walked home knowing everything was going to be okay.
