Many steps occur after you submit your Form I-485. Each of these steps has an associated processing time that causes a delay. Understanding the Form I-485 process and why it takes so long can make waiting for your green card a little easier.
Let's take a look at each step of the process that takes place after you submit your green card application.
What happens after I submit the I-485 form?
Let's take a look at the various steps that often cause a long I-485 processing time:
Your application has been received
What is the first thing to expect after correctly submitting Form I-485? The first notice you receive from the USCIS is an application receipt notice. formally known asForm I-797C Notice of Action, confirmation of receipt usually arrives 2-3 weeks after shipment.

If you have not received your complaint within the first month of filing, you must submit a case investigation.
Alternatively, if you have not filed your Form I-485 correctly, the USCIS will do one of two things:
- They will either send you a rejection notice of your application or
- USCIS may submit a request for evidence requesting additional items.
Both will significantly delay your order.
Your biometrics appointment is scheduled
You will then receive an appointment notification assigning the date, time and location of your biometric appointment. Appointment notification for your biometrics appointment should arrive approximately 3-5 weeks after submission.
Your biometric appointment is a normal part of the background check that all applicants go through. USCIS requires applicants to have fingerprints in order to complete a security clearance and criminal background check.
It's best to show up for your biometrics appointment at the agreed date and time. However, it is possible to reschedule a USCIS biometrics appointment if needed. The location for your biometrics appointment is usually the nearest USCIS Application Support Center.
You participate in your biometric appointment
On the scheduled date and time, you mustAttend your biometrics appointment. This usually happens around 5-8 weeks after submission.
The biometrics consultation is usually short – it should last around 30 minutes. This is not an interview. The purpose of the appointment is only to collect your biometric data.
To get to the biometric appointment, you must present an official photo ID. Please remember to bring your passport, driver's license, military ID with photo, or official government-issued photo ID to the appointment.
You will receive your EAD card
if you sent tooFormula I-765EFormula I-131As part of adjusting your status package, you will receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Your EAD card should arrive 12-16 weeks after shipment.
Your EAD card serves as a work permit. If you applied for a work permit and travel documents for early parole, both documents are usually combined into a single combined card.
It is useful to have a copy of your EAD card. Make a photocopy of both sides of the card and keep it in a safe place.

You will receive your invitation to an interview
Approximately 4-10 months after submission, you will receive an invitation to participate in an adjustment of status interview. The interview notice will be mailed as another Form I-797, Notice of Action.
Interviews are a normal part of the process. Your case type will influence your interview decision, but sending a well-prepared accommodation package with all the necessary documentation will increase your chances.
OStatus call customizationit will be held at a USCIS facility near you and will likely take less than 30 minutes.
You attend your adjustment of status interview
Your adjustment of status interview will take place between 6 and 12 months after you submit Form I-485.
Your interview notification contains a complete list of items to bring to the interview. If anything is out of date (for example, new address or new employer), bring the updated information with you to the interview.
You must have at hand:
- A completed copy of your immigration application and status application adjustments.
- Originals of all documents filed with the USCIS, such as birth and marriage certificates.
- your EAD card.
- Your passport, which contains the nonimmigrant visa you used to enter the United States
You get permanent residency
Form I-485 processing time ends when you obtain permanent residency. This usually takes 8-14 months after submission.
If your application is approved, USCIS will mail your green card shortly after your adjustment of status interview. Once you get your green card, you no longer need the EAD card. As a permanent resident, you have the right to travel and return outside the United States with a valid Green Card. You can also use the card as proof of your US work permit.
Once your change of status application is approved, you can ask the USCIS office to affix an “I-551” stamp to your passport. This is temporary proof that you are a permanent resident and valid for re-entry at a US port of entry.
If you have not received your green card in the mail, you can submit a case inquiry.
